Well, We Weren’t Expecting That

We went out to the South Bay to meet up with my sister for lunch and to review the dank sushi at Nozomi, but sadly, they were only open for dinner on Saturdays. Instead, we decided to give another place a shot. Miura was recommended by my Tito Jon (who recommended Sakae Sushi). Miura had a decent Yelp rating, even though the quantity of reviews were slim (only 95). We went in with pretty low expectations but open minds. Miura was tucked away in the back of an older strip mall that it shared with Harbor Freight and Burger City Grill.

But as Mom always says, never judge a book by it’s cover because boy… were we wrong.

We both ordered the Deluxe Chirashi. Much to our surprise, three appetizers came out before the Chirashi: Salad, Mozuku Su (a vinegar marinated seaweed), and Agedashi Tofu. Sadly, we didn’t take a picture of the salad because, well, it was just a normal salad. The other two appetizers however, were incredible. The Mozuku Su had a very flavorful vinegary taste. Its consistency, however, is something that some people might not be totally into — it’s viscous and pretty similar to the texture of snot (which is why one boss ate for two on this one).

The Agedashi Tofu was deep fried to perfection and underneath the deep fried crust was a deliciously silky tofu core. It was surrounded in a super tasty dashi sauce, which along with the green onions and grated daikon radish, was the most perfect combination of flavors.

The chirashi itself was a beautiful and generous assortment of Uni, Ikura, Octopus, Mackerel, Tuna, Otoro, Snapper, Halibut, Salmon, Crab, Scallop, Tamago, and pickled daikon radish. At first bite, we knew that this chirashi was something special. Each piece of sushi was melt-in-your-mouth dankness. Everything was so rich in flavor and the Uni and Otoro were SO incredible. Every piece of fish in the chirashi was incredibly fresh and very high quality. Below the fish was a layer of sushi rice cooked and seasoned to perfection.

Midway through eating our chirashi, they brought out our miso soup which was also a happy surprise, because it was freakin’ delicious. It had a roasted, smoky seaweed flavor that was super satisfying to sip on in between bites of the fish. For $28, you get three appetizers, a generous serving of fresh chirashi and miso soup, all of which are equally impressive. It’s an unbeatable deal for what you get.

This place completely blew our minds and our expectations. So much care and attention to detail are given to each dish. When we were seated, there were only two other tables occupied. After eating at Miura, we both find it insane and shocking that it isn’t packed with a line out the door for lunch, considering how transcendent our experience here was. One thing to note before we sign off is that there are only 5-6 tables inside plus the sushi bar and though it was empty for lunch, it might be a totally different experience for dinner in terms of wait time. Let us know how it is if you come here for dinner!
