Chirashi Rules Everything Around Me

There are a few spots in Little Tokyo that we circulate among depending on what we’re in the mood for. We’ve got our go-to’s for ramen, udon, sushi lunches, sushi dinners, chirashi, etc. Sushi Go 55 is our go-to for chirashi in Little Tokyo.

Sushi Go 55 is tucked away in a corner of the Little Tokyo Shopping Center mall. It’s pretty unassuming from the outside and can easily be overlooked if you’re not specifically looking for it. If you’re going to come here, expect to pay anywhere between $20-$30 for chirashi, but rest assured, you’ll be getting your money’s worth. If you feeling like living the baller’s lifestyle on the particular evening you find yourself here, we highly recommend ballin’ out on their chirashi matsu. You don’t just get one layer of fish on top of rice. Nope. You get a double decker set up filled to the brim with all sorts of goodness. You can expect Uni, Scallop, Ikura, Salmon, Tuna, Mackerel, Yellowtail, Albacore, Ebi, Tamago, Masago, and a Shiitake mushroom. Each bite from the chirashi matsu is one that should be savored. The fish is incredibly high-grade and fresh, and the sushi rice is perfect. Most chirashi bowls at other sushi restaurants aren’t anything special to look at; however, at Sushi Go 55, you can tell that they prepare their chirashi bowls with the utmost respect and take pride in their preparations.

This time around, we also decided to try something new and something we wouldn’t usually order here. We ordered their black cod with egg custard and a side of steamed rice. It was delicious and totally worth getting if you’re in the mood for gindara. The grilled miso cod was just the right amount of sweet and salty and cooked to perfection. We barely had to poke it with a chopstick for the meat to effortlessly flake off (just be careful for bones). The egg custard came a little later than the fish and rice which was a nice surprise. It was our first time having chawanmushi (Japanese style savory egg custard) and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Inside the small cup of custard were hidden pieces of fish cake, shiso, shiitake mushroom and lemon zest. I think the egg custard was also cooked in some sort of broth (perhaps dashi?) because it was super flavorful!

If you’re in the mood for chirashi and find yourself in Little Tokyo, treat yourself to a double-decker serving at Sushi Go 55. The fish is fresh, portions large and service friendly. You won’t regret it.
