Cuckoo for Gook Soo
Tonight was a particularly cold evening for us Californians, so naturally we were both craving a nice steamin’ bowl of noodles. We’ve had Ma Dang Gook Soo bookmarked for awhile now on our spreadsheet, so we decided to try it out tonight for the first time.
This place is such a gem! It’s a small restaurant in a strip mall next to a BCD in K-Town. The service, to our surprise, was pretty quick and very friendly.
For banchan here, you get a heaping pile of unlimited kimchi, radish and cabbage in vinegar. All of them are super tasty and complimented our meal nicely.
There is also unlimited hot barley tea that was the PERFECT drinking temperature. More often than not, tea is scalding hot and you have to wait a while before you can even touch it; however, it was drinkable right away here.
We ordered the Kimchi Noodles and Spicy Squid with Rice. Both were outstanding and warmed us right up. The noodles consisted of a thick spicy and sour broth with soft, handmade noodles. Accompanying the noodles were green onion, kimchi and thick slices of potato. Yes, there were potatoes in these noodles and it was delicious! The broth is super thick and coats the noodles really nicely, but it’s a little bit too thick to drink like regular soup. Also, just a heads up, the portions are really big here. One bowl can definitely feed two people!
The spicy squid was a really nice surprise. We decided to get it last minute without doing any research on Yelp. The squid was cooked perfectly. Not too chewy, not too fishy. It was served in a thick, spicy, salty red sauce along with cucumber, rice cake, kimchi, carrots, and a mound of rice. It was soooo tasty. Highly recommend both of these dishes if you come here because it really hit the spot tonight. We’ll definitely be coming back and will probably be ordering the same exact thing.
