Get In, Do Ya Thang, Now Get Out!

This review is for all you Sugarfish fans out there. Kazu Nori is a hand roll bar owned by Sushi Nozawa, the same company that owns Sugarfish. The concept for the downtown restaurant is pretty interesting. With just a single U-shaped bar in the middle of a small restaurant seating about 20 people and a single-file line of people waiting to get seated, Kazu Nori is designed to be a quick and efficient hand roll bar for customers to get in, do their thing and then get out. Cool idea, but not sure how well this works out since Angelenos often take their sweet time over their meal.

We waited about 20 minutes in a single-file line to get seated. Customers are tasked with the responsibility of seating themselves once enough spots open up at the bar. Once seated, you’ll immediately recognize a similar plate setting as Sugarfish, but instead of a white plate, you are given a single sheet of brown wax paper that serves as your plate for the whole hand roll course. Nice detail to support the whole “quick & dirty” theme of the experience. Each hand roll is made fresh right in front of you by a chef in the middle of the bar.

The hand rolls look exactly the same as the ones they serve at Sugar fish and are filled with various fillings. You can walk out feeling totally stuffed (mostly on rice, but w/e) for $23. With this you get six different hand rolls: toro, yellowtail, salmon, bay scallop, crab, and lobster. Peep the photos below and hover to see a quick description if you are so inclined

Toro

Salmon

Blue crab

Yellowtail

Bay Scallop

Lobster

Kazu Nori is a cool little spot in DTLA with an interesting concept and tasty food. Waiting time can vary depending on when you go, but if you’re looking for a more traditional sushi experience, this isn’t quite the spot for that. Would definitely recommend this place for a treat yoself lunch break with a friend or two.
