Good, Cheap, and Fast — Pick all 3

Though unintentional, we just realized this is a perfect follow up to our last review on one of our favorite sandwiches from Roma Market. Bánh Mì My-Tho is our favorite go-to bánh mì, or Vietnamese sandwich, spot in the LA area. It’s the best bánh mì I’ve had in the states and is the closest I’ve ever gotten to the bánh mì I’d have every day when living in Vietnam.

What sets one bánh mì apart from another is the bread and meat. Cilantro, jalapeno, pickled carrot and radish, and pate are kind of hard to mess up. The bread that Bánh Mì My-Tho uses is amazing. Flakey and crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Just how it should be. The baguettes they use are also on the slimmer side which is reminiscent of the shape and size of bánh mì in Vietnam.

We usually order the #8 (charbroiled pork sandwich) and #6 (shredded pork sandwich). The #8 is probably their most popular bánh mì and I order #6 because I just love bi, a special type of cold shredded pork. Bi has a very particular taste to it and may not be for everybody; however, you definitely can’t go wrong with their charbroiled pork or shredded chicken bánh mì. The charbroiled pork is cooked to perfection — sweet, salty, tender and smokey from the char. The bi is refreshing because it’s nice and cold with a little bit of crunch. It’s got a roasted and earthy taste to it.

Pair a bánh mì with a cà phê sữa đá (Vietnamese iced coffee) and you’ll be enjoying a delicious meal for less than $7. Their bánh mì is about $3.80 each and iced coffee about $3. Grabbing a sandwich to-go here is a delicious and cheap meal. You can even enjoy it right outside on the plastic bench they have set up if you’re too impatient to wait till you get home!
